Periodontal Disease is the most common infectious disease in the world.
Often referred to as Gum Disease, it is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infection and if left untreated it may lead to tooth loss.
Healthy gums are pale pink, smooth and firm; however, if an infection develops between the teeth, the gums will begin to pull away. They will also become red and swollen and even bleed during chewing and brushing. While Periodontal Disease is often caused by plaque, a number of other factors including poorly fitting bridges, badly aligned teeth and defective fillings contribute to the development of this condition.
Periodontal Disease has often been labelled the “silent disease” due to the fact that many people are unaware they have it. Many patients only become aware of their symptoms once the disease is advanced. By recognising the early signs of gum disease, you can avoid further deterioration of the gums and bone and prevent tooth loss.
